Nearly two million people from the north-eastern Indian state of Assam may lose their citizenship after the government brought out the final version of the National Register of Citizens or NRC last month. The NRC is a list of people who can prove they came to the state by 24 March 1971, the day before neighbouring Bangladesh declared independence from Pakistan. The register was primarily targeted at people whom authorities describe as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, which shares a border with Assam. Murali Krishnan traveled to Assam to investigate in a first of a two-part series.
